 NUBRA VALLEY

The Nubra Valley has it all – the meeting of the  Shyok and Siachan rivers. It is an oasis in the middle of a cold desert famed for its desert landscape, sand dunes and camel safaris and to top it all, one has to pass Khadungla Pass, the highest motorable road in the world to arrive at the Nubra Valley.

Nubra Valley is also popular for the Diskit Monastery, considered to be the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra Valley. the monastery’s most prominent attraction is the huge Maitreya Buddha statue atop it and its vast collection of murals and display of frescoes. The Monastery was inaugurated by HH Dalai Lama. From the base of the statue, one can get a gorgeous panoramic view of the Nubra valley.

Accommodation in Nubra Valley is in tents close to the sand dunes with the Rocky Mountains in the background. Once you have taken in the beauty of Nubra Valley, putting up for a couple of days, time to head over to the exclusive Pangong lake.

PANGONG LAKE

Leave the best for the last part of your tour. Exit Nubra Valley and enter into the region of the Pangong lake. This beautiful endorheic salt water lake situated in the Himalayas is 134 km long, extending from India to China. Pangong Lake is situated at a height of 4350 m and is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the country as it keeps changing colours with the passage of time during the day.

Camping on the shores of its lake is an absolute delight, especially if you can see the lake from your campsite. The lake is also a paradise for migratory birds like the Ruddy shelducks, the Bar-headed Goose Anser, Brown headed gulls, seagulls, Brahmini ducks, Raven, Red billed Chough and the Tibetan Snowcock to name a few.

Head back to Leh visiting the Shey Palace, Thicksay Monastery and the famous Rancho School, perhaps the most photographed place in Ladakh, made popular by the Bollywood film- 3 Idiots.
